Compulsory Attendance and Ramifications – Monday 18 May

Dear Parents and Caregivers,

Premier, Mark McGowan, and Minister of Education, Sue Ellery, after extensive consultation with health experts and school groups, today announced the return to normal school operations from Monday 18 May.

At St. Andrew’s Grammar we have been operating close to 90% attendance, so not a lot will change for us, however, it is important that we share the key aspects of the decisions made today and what we will be doing as a school, which are summarised as follows:

 WHOLE SCHOOL:
  • All School students are required back at school from Monday 18 May. Should students remain away without good reason, they will no longer be provided with learning packages and their absence will be marked as unauthorised. However, any students who are medically vulnerable, will be assessed and can continue to learn from home, supported by their schools and the Department of Education.
  • Strict environmental cleaning throughout the school day, including high-touch surfaces and playground equipment, will continue as will reinforced hygiene measures.
  • Drop off and pick up arrangements that restrict parents and carers, and non-essential visitors, from entering school grounds will remain in place. The arrangements as of yesterday will remain in place for the foreseeable future.
  • Whole school assemblies, camps and interschool activities and sports will still not be permitted.
  • Even though schools are not required to report A-E grades we will be doing so in the end of Semester 1 reports. In the meantime, our teachers will continue to provide informal feedback to parents and carers throughout the semester as required.
  • Canteens to re-open. Our canteen will re-open for service this coming Monday.
  • Only incursions and excursions for the purpose of course completion (senior school subjects) should proceed. However, they should not exceed 20 people in total, and supervisors/staff are to maintain social distancing.
  • Staff and Parent meetings can take place for up to 20 persons whilst maintaining social distancing (4m² ruling), however, as a school we will continue to use ZOOM to good effect, unless specifically required to be on site.

SECONDARY SCHOOL ONLY:

Focussed Information

  • ATAR written exams will go ahead as scheduled from November 2. Written examinations will take the same form as previous years, with a three-hour duration.
  • For Year 9 students who were unable to sit the NAPLAN this year due to COVID-19, more flexibility will be introduced into the Online Literacy and Numeracy Assessment (OLNA). This will give Year 9 students the opportunity to demonstrate the literacy and numeracy standards required to achieve the Western Australian Certificate of Education (WACE).
  • Students will revert to wearing their formal uniform to school and changing in and out of their sports uniform before and after sports classes. The only exception to this will be on Mondays for Year 7 & 8 students who, as per pre-COVID-19 arrangements, can wear their sports uniform to school but must change into their formal uniform after their morning sport class.

These aspects may be reviewed as per instructions from the Minister and/or Premier, and any future changes will be communicated, however, our focus is on what is best for our students, your children. We look forward to continued support from our parents as we face this continually evolving situation.
