Sunday 22 March

School Closure due to COVID-19 – Sunday 22 March

Dear Parents & Guardians,

Yesterday, I was made aware of a parent in our community having been tested for COVID-19 and receiving a positive result on Friday. This parent has children in Year 1 and Year 4. Neither of these children have had any symptoms of COVID-19. I have personally spoken to the family yesterday and today and they were self-isolating from Friday.

As you would expect we have contacted that Department of Health and have sought their advice. The advice was that the family needed to self-isolate but there was no compulsion to close the school.  However, after extensive discussion with  both the School Board and Hellenic Community we have made the decision to close the school from Monday the 23rd March. The plan is to reopen normally in Term 2 when we will have completely disinfected the school. If necessary, we will conduct contact tracing of the students whose parent has tested positive (if either student shows symptoms). We apologise for the last minute nature of this announcement and the issues this may cause but the safety of our children is paramount and a priority for us.

During this three-week closure we will be offering online learning to every student. We have prepared well for this eventuality. Just this weekend we have completed both primary and secondary online trials for our students and the reports were that these were effective and workable. The following platforms and time frames will take place:

PRIMARY

  • There will be a check in at 8.40am with the Teacher for morning attendance and an outline of the day ahead. We recommend strongly that parents, if available, are in the background listening to this so that they are aware of what is expected that day.
  • In all timetabled lessons there will be a teacher available, however, parents should expect at least half of each day to be live video access. During the balance of day the teacher will be there to answer questions and provide assistance with activities and work set.

SECONDARY

  • There will be a check in at 8.40am with the Teacher for morning attendance
  • For every subject there will be two lessons which will be live – these are the first lesson and third lesson of the week for each subject. Each subject teacher will be in touch with their class through SEQTA and will have already set up ZOOM links for these face-to-face lessons.  During the balance of lessons staff will be available for questions from students via one-on-one online chat.   The last lesson of the week will be online for Art, Music, Drama and Physical Education.   The roll will be taken for each online lesson.

Every student will hear directly from their respective teachers in Primary (through Classroom Dojo) and Secondary (through SEQTA). If families are at all concerned with the online learning that they are receiving during this three-week closure, I would like to hear directly from them via principal@sag.wa.edu.au.

Though these are very difficult and unprecedented times, we will get through them together. We have excellent community spirit at this school so let us look after one another – we will be stronger for it.
