The focus during the early phase of a student’s Secondary School journey is a seamless transition from Year 6 in the Primary School to Year 7 in the Secondary School and a Year 7/8 Transition Programme in the Secondary School. Year 6 students begin their journey with a half-day Secondary School orientation in Term 2 and a full day Secondary School orientation in Term 3. In Term 2, Year 6 students are invited to join our after school weekly Science Orientation Programme, with our laboratory technician, Mrs Cristina Stewart. In Term 2, the Parents and Friends host a Year 6/7/8 Disco Night where students are given the opportunity to socialise. In sport, the Year 6 students are invited to participate in the Secondary School Swimming, Cross Country and Athletics Carnivals, and various Inter-House and Inter-School events. In Term 4, specialist teachers in Creative Writing, Humanities and Mathematics take specialist classes in Year 6.
Year 7 and 8 students are placed in a vertical form group with a Year 7/8 Form Teacher. In Term 1, Year 7 students attend a Year 7 Orientation Camp at the Ern Halliday Recreation Camp Site in Hillary’s with their Form Teacher and Year 7 teachers.
In Term 2, the Year 7/8 students are given the opportunity to attend the bi-annual Year 7/8 Transition Tour to Canberra.
Year 7/8 students are placed in combined classes for some of their subjects. This provides greater opportunities for remedial and extension work, as well as more effective interaction across year groups.
Mr Andrew Martin is the 2017 Transition Programme Coordinator.
